Actor Dhanush who has produced many more films that won international and national acclaims offers his latest outing ‘Amma Kanakku’ starring Amala Paul, Yuvashri, Revathy and Samuthirakani in lead roles with Maestro Ilayaraja composing music.
Having lost her husband, Amala Paul works as housemaid and is the only breadwinner in family with her only daughter (Yuvashri). Her daughter has a serious trouble of not getting better score in Mathematics and she cannot afford to get tuition due to financial crisis. Filled with disappointments, Yuvashri too feels that even her future is going to be the same as her mother to work as housemaid. Now and then, Amala Paul gets some help from her owner (Revathy) and she manages to get her maid join the 10th STD, where her daughter Yuvashri could get some support and encouragement.
Filmmaker Ashwini Iyer who made the original version in Hindi has directed the remake as well and has tried to maintain the subject with right emotions. She is gifted to have got the right pick of actors and they contribute their best in the film’s finest output. The basic theme of the film is so much intriguing as it deals with contemporary issues of what the parents and children go through the course of their education. Although, the point of time where Amala Paul decides to join the same class of her daughter to motivate her is something unacceptable, it gets balanced with right approach. The film’s running length of 2 hours has been utilized with best performances and convincing narration. Although, the film without commercial elements might not be a piece of cake for major audiences, we should appreciate the effort of entire team in bringing up a good film. Cinematography and Maestro Ilayaraja’s musical score are the top-notch elements that support the film’s narration.
Both the lead actors – Amala Paul and Yuvashri playing the role of mother and daughter have taken their best in contesting against each other in performances. They are seen offering spellbinding show throughout the film. It’s been a very long time we saw Amala Paul in such a convincing role and she has done it with excellence. Samuthirakani impresses us with his naturalistic acting and there are times, where you might feel that he is getting little exaggerated, but that’s quite acceptable for his screen presence. Newcomer Yuvashri has given her best and her role is a reflection of many children of her age, who don’t understand the pain and hard work of their parents and that’s because of their innocence. Revathy needs no analysis for her performance and she is just – A Genius. Others in the cast involving Vishal Dev, Malavika and Vicky have done their best into their roles.
1. Beautiful content avoiding unwanted commercial elements
2. Casting and performances
3. Cinematography and musical score
What doesn’t work?
1. Apart from little illogical aspects, there is nothing much to look upon the flip side.
For Dhanush, who has been producing unconventional genre movies winning acclaims, Amma Kanakku is yet another feather added to his production house.
