From the filmmaker Prabhu Solomon successfully completing travel and nature based love trilogy, he continues to come up with the same genre ‘Thodari’, which is completely shot in Train. The film features National award winning actor Dhanush and Keerthy Suresh in lead roles with an ensemble star-cast of Thambi Ramaiah, Karunakaran, Chinni Jayanth, Radharavi, Harish Uthaman, Ganesh Venkatrman and many others.
A train journey from New Delhi to Chennai brings together various characters onboard – Pantry Boy Dhanush and Touch-up girl Keerthy Suresh. As the duo starts sharing a bond of relationship and as they decide to express their love, the train gets into a complex situation due to the carelessness and fate with few more characters causing more havoc. The lives of 800 passengers are at stake and everything is out of control, where the love story between Dhanush and Keerthy Suresh has to fight between fate and destiny.
Prabhu Solomon has done a neat research over the detailing in few portions, where he has clearly researched through the working pattern of train based on automatic locomotive, engineering and other stuffs. His way of sketching characterizations too deserve special mention. It’s really surprising to see that Dhanush doesn’t get additional footage, but stays up in the picture just like other characters. In fact, you won’t find him on the screens post-intermission nearly for 25 minutes, which is a bold attempt, where not many heroes would actually accept. In fact across the complete duration of the running length, Dhanush actually share the space on pars with other actors equally. The comedy sequences have been written neatly, especially for the scenes involving Dhanush-Thambi Ramaiah-Karunakaran. But when it comes to romance, Prabhu Solomon fails to bring up the same impact of his erstwhile movies here. The first half is completely spent on the establishment of characterizations from the protagonist to the small cameo of Bose Venkat and Banuchandar. Background score by D Imman is appreciable and song ‘Pona Usuru’ is best. Cinematography is yet another embellishment and editing is perfect in stunt sequences keeping up the raciness.
This is not a routine Dhanush film and his characterization is so simple, where he gets to score only by the last 20 minutes of the film. So is it for Keerthy Suresh. In fact, their emotional sequences are just limited to the same duration and until then; it’s a collage of many actors. Radharavi impresses well with his usual sleepwalk impact. Although Thambi Ramaiah is over noisy in places, his comedy sense does get a good scope. Karunakaran evokes laughter with his portions. Harish Uthaman is found as a psychotic commando, where his role is flimsy and not written well at all. Others in the cast like Chinni Jayanth, Ganesh Venkatram, Prem, Gnana Sambandham and few more actors.

‘Thodari’ would have been much better with a 2-hr version, which could have kept audiences edge seated completely and now with such a lengthy duration, it would appear to be straining in few portions, especially with the first half. But as on whole, it would definitely appeal to the family audiences, especially across sub-urban and rural areas.
Verdict : The long Train journey with some slow and fast momentums
