When ‘Horror Houses’ became parallel heroes in the movies

Just as we glimpse upon the long queue of horror movies, we always find that ‘Houses’ have played an intriguing part. Moreover, the words ‘House’ and ‘Horror’ have always remained to be the closest synonyms, where we can easily relate these terms with. You walk upon a street and instantly get to see a desolated house and instantly it kindles in you the creepiness. Such is the exact horripilating experience, which happens from the world’s most celebrated ‘Conjuring’ to the local ‘Kanchana’.

This Friday, we get to see that horror-comedy ‘Sangili Bungili Kathava Thorae’ has a similar backdrop of ‘Haunted House’ and in this context; we take a look back moment in Tamil horror movies that had same element of ‘Horror House’.

1. Chandramukhi

Although, the film was a psychological thriller laced with supernatural elements, the mammoth palace like mansion. In fact, the posters of this film carried the gigantic view of the house with Rajinikanth’s smiling side profile image.

2. Aranmanai and Aranmanai 2

Just as the title suggests, both Aranmanai and Aranmanai 2 featured ‘Palace like Houses’ as the major backdrops. In fact, the first and foremost highlighting trait about this film was the panoramic shot of the palace.

3. Yaamirukka Bayamey

This was an out and out horror-comedy that completely was set inside the motel like mansion. The guests staying at the house are mysteriously killed and this leads to a series of events with a dark hidden mystery from the flashback unveiled. This had nothing to do with revenge or vengeance of a ghost, but was completely attached to the ‘HOUSE’.

4. Dhillukku Dhuddu

Although the first half of this film never had any horror or supernatural elements, the prologue followed by the post-intermission sequences had the premise of haunted house at hill station having its play of horripilating moments. The Goosebumps were at dearth, but the spooky feel of the house was very much engrossing in this Santhanam starrer movie.

5. Pizza

Vijay Sethupathi’s breakthrough film ‘Pizza’ was completely shot inside a house, which is said to be a ‘Haunted’ located across the heart of Chennai city. Even in the visual promos, more than the concept of ‘Pizza’, it was the house that was highly noticeable.

6. Ananthapurathu Veedu

This film produced by Director Shankar and directed by ‘Marma Desam’ fame Naaga wasn’t a blatant horror movie, but instead an emotional supernatural drama, where parents appear as ghosts inside their ancestral home taking care of their son, daughter-in-law and grandson. The whole movie was set inside the home and even the title suggested the same of having importance of home.

There are few other movies like Pizza II – The Villa, Yaavarum Nalam, Eeram and few more to add up in the list, which were set inside a house, but these top 5 movies were the actually cynosure with ‘Houses’ playing major roles.
