Right from the initial phase of Tamil cinema, the collaboration of top heroes and music directors had never been a surprise. Be the times, when MGR, Sivaji Ganesan and other prominent actors of 50s or the ones by the 80s like Rajinikanth, Kamal Haasan et la, we could easily predict or perhaps, go with the right assumptions on who the music director would be for the movies. But in the recent times, say around past 2-3 years, the collaboration of A-league actors and newly arrived music directors happened and in fact proved to be a tremendous success. Here are few such instances, which had bestowed the Tamil film buffs with huge surprise.

1. Rajinikanth - Santhosh Narayanan

Right from the time of Muthu, Superstar Rajinikanth had predominantly preferred AR Rahman for his albums. At times, there were some optional ones like Vidhyasagar, which happened for Chandramukhi. But all of sudden, there happened to be a surprisal to everyone as he teamed up with Santhosh Narayanan for Pa Ranjith’s Kabali.

2. Kamal Haasan - Ghibran

This was completely out of box surprise. Naturally, Kamal Haasan would often prefer Maestro Ilayaraja to compose music, but then he teamed up with Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy for Vishwaroopam following which he struck a stupendous deal on four back to back films with Ghibran (Vishwaroopam 2, Uthama Villain, Papanasam and Thoonga Vanam).

3. STR - Kuralarasan

These brothers had more probabilities to team up, but finally it happened with Idhu Namma Aalu, directed by Pandiraj. Among 5 tracks, half of them turned to be decent hits and even the background score for this film was decorously appreciated.

4. Ajith Kumar - Anirudh

A complete surprise indeed!!! Usually Ajith Kumar doesn’t prefer much into the selection of music directors for his movies and would stick to the director’s choice. While Siruthai fame Siva and Ajith Kumar joined up for ‘Veeram’, it was Devi Sri Prasad and the same was expected with their future endeavours. But to everyone’s surprise, Anirudh came onboard for ‘Vedalam’ and rest is known for its celebration and massive appeal. Their bonding continues with ‘Vivegam’ too.

5. Dhanush - Sean Roldan

Dhanush has been privileged to have worked with different music directors in a short span of time. He started off his career with Yuvan Shankar Raja and then a film with maestro Ilayaraja following which he delivered decent hits with GV Prakash. Couple of projects with AR Rahman and then introduced Anirudh. Now it’s all about Sean Roldan, who scored music for his debut directorial Pa Pandi and now for Velai Illa Pattadhaari 2 as well.
