Not bothered if the film is good or bad: but please tell if Puriyaatha Puthir is a remake of ‘Karthik Calling Karthik’?
This was the first and foremost doubt even we had while entering theatres to watch the film and the answer is big ‘NO’. The film has no similarities with the best thriller of Bollywood titled ‘Karthik Calling Karthik’. But to a surprise, the film faintly resembles one of the famous mystery-thriller of Tamil cinema during early beginning of 2000.
Ah! No way! Revealing it would be a spoilsport.
Vijay Sethupathi has been landing with too many quick releases every year. His latest outing ‘Vikram Vedha’ is still running in theatres. Isn’t that too early for another release?
Yes, but the fact is the movie was completed nearly before 2-3 years and release has been pending for so long time. Initially, it was titled ‘Mellisai’, but after J Satish Kumar clasped the rights, he titled it as ‘Puriyaatha Puthir’.
What’s the reason behind renaming the movie when ‘Mellisai’ itself is beautiful?
The title ‘Mellisai’ is beautiful indeed and this was precisely because the lead characters have significance with the music. But J Satish Kumar felt that thriller and suspense dominates throughout the film and henceforth renamed it as ‘Puriyaatha Puthir’, which gave a dimension of expectation for the film.
If the makers had given so much importance to the title ‘Puriyaatha Puthir’, does the film carry so much of suspense and mystery?
The story revolves around Gayathri as a music teacher and Vijay Sethupathi owns a musical instrument store. Both of them bounce into each other and after couple of casual catch-ups, they begin their relationship. When things are picture-perfect, Vijay Sethupathi’s friend commits suicide after his personal affair video gets leaked. Even before a breathing time, another incident occurs with a shocking video about Gayathri sent to Vijay Sethupathi’s mobile. Now the protagonist embarks on the journey to unravel the mystery behind these mishaps.
After coming across this synopsis, it looks like the film would be definitely engaging with thrill moments?
That turns out to be an issue or problem with Puriyaatha Puthir, where we get to see that the screenplay is sluggish in places. First 30 minutes into the film, the portions involving Vijay Sethupathi and Gayathri are slow and sluggish. Even the thriller toast is added up, the songs happen to be a speed breaker. To divert our attention towards other direction, the characterization of Ramesh Thilak has been intentionally included, which never takes the story forward. Moreover, as cited above, the film remains us off a famous suspense-thriller drama made during early 2000. If the director and writers had considered these drawbacks and revised it for betterment, the film would have been more engaging.
Sam CS’ collaboration with Vijay Sethupathi in Vikram Vedha was a huge success. But you tell us songs are major drawbacks here?
The songs are good as you listen on your track lists, but the placement and treatment alone decides its overall success. But his work on BGM is definitely worthy of appreciations.
While Vijay Sethupathi is now journeying successful as a mass hero, will this film hinder his growth?
Not at all! Everyone knows about his dedication and perfection to the role he does in spite of its prominence. He had signed this film before few years during his initial hits. But that doesn’t hamper his status anywhere. It’s a part and parcel of every actor in their career, so it doesn’t matter.
This is the third film of Gayathri with Vijay Sethupathi… How does she perform in this movie?
She is even teaming up with Vijay Sethupathi in two more movies that includes Seethakathi and Aneedhi Kathaigal. Although the story involves around her role, she fails to hold the role intact and she could have done a better job. In fact, her role is very much adjoined with a strong message in the film, but she doesn’t get her characterization sparked up.
Message….? What is it all about in this movie?
in this era of technological advancement, there are lots of good and bad things to share. On the flip side, what happens when our very own family member or friend become a victim to such evil deeds.
Apart from these elements, is there anything special in the film?
Away from Vijay Sethupathi and Gayathri, there is another special actor in the film, but revealing the name and their characterization would be a spoiler. It’s the request of Puriyaatha Puthir team as well.
