Following his tremendous comeback with ‘Thani Oruvan’, which was a fresh and direct script for the first time, director Mohan Raja gets his latest presentation ‘Velaikkaran’ on big screens worldwide from today. The film features Sivakarthikeyan, Nayantara and Fahadh Faasil in lead roles with Prakash Raj, Sneha, RJ Balaji, Robo Shankar and Satish in important roles. Anirudh has composed music for this film, which has cinematography handled by Ramji.
Being born and brought up in slum, Sivakarthikeyan entertainers and educates the dwellers with his amateur radio. But due to heavy pressures from the local goon (Prakash Raj) and to make sure that his family is happy and stable, he gets himself into a decent job as salesperson. He comes across an intelligent officer (Fahadh Faasil), who he adores as role model and inspiration. But as Sivakarthikeyan’s journey into corporate world begins, he starts unfolding the bitter side of it.
A simple line of verdict would be – A responsible movie. Director Mohan Raja and producer RD Raja precisely deserve a token of appreciation for conceptualizing a blunt reality as the major premise. This is something that everyone would get so much adhered towards and take back home rethinking about our way of life. Such happens to be the impact created by Velaikkaran. But what happens to be a slightest hassling force is the narrative aspect. We find major portions of the film dominated by ‘Dialogues’, especially the ‘Preachy Lines’, which might turn us restless. The ‘Drama’ goes missing is many places, which at times gets us little bored up. But the dialogues are stunning that keeps urging us to clap for they are more thought provoking.
Art director Muthuraj and cinematographer Ramji have strained a lot contributing the best in their respective departments. The set works of slum gives a realistic feel and cinematographer Ramji handling visuals with unique treatment gives an impressive appeal. But it’s little disappointing to hear an average background score from Anirudh. Except for the signature theme for Fahadh Faasil, rest of them sound mediocre. Ruben’s editing could have been yet more crisp and perfect.
It is quite evident that Sivakarthikeyan is trying to transcend from his erstwhile movies to betterment. We do appreciate his involvement and his strong belief in doing this film at this point of time. Well, we don’t get to see Sivakarthikeyan as an entertainer here, but the script is inclined towards a sensitive set up. Nayantara is almost like a blink and miss role, where she does nothing other than standing besides Sivakarthikeyan during his mission. Same situation with RJ Balaji and Robo Shankar for they don’t have anything to perform or tickle our funny bones. Sneha does a brilliant job with dedication. Vijay Vasanth does a remarkable job. Prakash Raj doesn’t get a scope to perform, except a particular scene. But who’s scoring huge is none other than Fahadh Faasil. He just leaves us marvelled from scene to scene.
1. Sensitive storyline
2. Performances of actors especially Fahadh Faasil
3. Cinematography and Art
What doesn’t work?
1. Too many dialogues
2. Background score
3. Characterizations (Except Sivakarthikeyan and Fahadh Faasil)
Velaikkaran deals with a much critical crisis in today’s world and it gives a deep impact. Had director Mohan Raja tried to emphasis more stress on interesting drama than spending more time with preachy dialogues, Velaikkaran would have been a much outstanding movie.
Verdict : Velaikkaran possesses a huge realistic plot but gets dominated with long preaching.
Rating : 5/10
