We knew very well that Arunraja Kamaraj has been grabbing us as lyricist and as a singer for many years. Will this new avatar of Arunraja as a director will be liked by everyone? Will this movie be a record just like ‘Chak De! India’, ‘Dangal’ or any other sports movie? How will our ‘Tamil Ponnu’ Aishwarya Rajesh be as a cricket player in ‘Kanaa’? What will be the actual story? Let this review give the readers a wide vision about ‘Kanaa’!
Kousalya sees her dad to be her everything and grows up seeing his dad with pride to be a farmer and also with great love for watching cricket matches on TV. She finds her dad crying if India loses in match but doesn’t feel even if his dad passes away. In order to make her dad smile, Kousi wanted to play cricket and make his family happy. On the other hand she finds that people considering cricket to be a game for guys and not for girls when she comes to know that cricket is not taught to girls in her school whereas she gets hope when she sees boys playing cricket match in boys’ school. She gets trained by playing with guys and tries to learn the techniques in cricket and then she finds great objection from her mom and society for playing cricket with guys. Besides all these, Kousi’s dad gets loss in agriculture because of no proper rain. Simultaneously facing criticisms and difficulties for living, how Kousi and her dad manage to become successful in cricket and agriculture respectively? How Kousi will get into ‘Indian Women Cricket Team’? How she stands out from other players in the team? What will Siva Karthikeyan as Nelson Dilip Kumar do in this movie? Will she make her dad happy by winning in the match? The efforts for achieving the dream of Kousalya become the insight for the climax in ‘Kanaa’!
Making it interesting from the first frame of the movie, Arunraja Kamaraj has made a bright screenplay narrating the objections faced by a girl who wanted to achieve in the field of sports, the entire movie approaches so engaging till the end. However reminding us about Chak De! India in the second half because of Sivakarthikeyan’s involvement the only lag we can notice is SK’s introduction as a ‘mechanic’. While the weightage of characters like Kousalya and Kousalya’s farmer father, were so intense throughout, playing with ideas to flourish cricket and agriculture simultaneously. Screenplay was moving forward to development till the end without depression and with impactful dialogues. Background score of Dhibu Ninan Thomas, appealing cinematography of Dinesh Krishnan and editing of Ruben were so effective to feel the depth of the situations narrated in the movie.
‘Kanaa’ would have been unbelievable if Aishwarya Rajesh and Sathyaraj were not present on screen as a cricket player and farmer dad respectively. Aishwarya Rajesh has shown more concentration and perfection in her character to portray as a female cricket player which is well executed in the screens. Sathyaraj has been perfectly getting in the skin of character and supported the development of the story even while sad sequences. Special mention to the ‘adamant mom’ character for implying stubborn dialogues on screens with much impressive body language. However Ramdoss has appeared at the beginning but disappeared without any clue in between the first half, Sivakarthikeyan’s character with lots of silence and strong dialogues has been travelling well in the movie. Remaining actors were also limited by giving their good performance as characterized in the movie with good message.
2) Cast and execution of story as visuals
3) Directly conveyed message
What doesn’t work?
1) Stressed Sivakarthikeyan’s character
2) Depressing scenes because of unpaid loans
On the whole, ‘Kanaa’ has a very motivating subject for women who are rushing to succeed in their lives and also to parents who listen to society about growing female child.
‘Kanaa’ is a great play with important motivating messages!
