After the release of the romantic drama ‘96’, Vijay Sethupathi who has been trying out variety of roles in movies, has been waiting for the release of ‘Seethakaathi’ for a while. With great make up and effort of carrying over the character of an old man, Vijay Sethupathi’s ‘Ayya Aathimoolam’ character is much expected among his fans and also to general cinema audience. Will this movie retain to be a remarkable one in Vijay Sethupathi’s film career? Will it mesmerize Makkal Selvan’s fans? Let this review give a precise idea about ‘Seethakaathi’!
Ayya Aathimoolam is a legendary play artist who works in ‘Government Drama Sabha’ for almost 50 years. He also trains people to act in drama with huge respect to art on one hand such that he has a great burden to save his grandson from brain tumor for operation with lump sum money on the other hand. Meanwhile, Ayya who never leaves acting in plays understands about the gradual interest of audience in drama because of movies. With all these worries and responsibilities he is respected by everyone even by movie celebrities, ending up with the unexpected breathe taking pause from play due to death. But all we know is death is not the end for everything and ‘Soul’ is immortal. What are the consequences followed by that? Will he continue acting even after death? Or will he make people those all he had trained to act like him? Will people remember him and perform well with his blessings? Or will he come in disguise with his soul entering into actors? The climax reveals that art can never end the soul of any passionate artist in ‘Seethakaathi’!
Entirely beating the bush with a new idea, Balaji Tharaneetharan has played with a great safe move in the screenplay by making Vijay Sethupathi to be present in the first 40 minutes. On the other hand, the contribution of performance by Vijay Sethupathi has been a tremendous support to the story travelled with an unbelievable storyline. With good actor like Vijay Sethupathi, some of the portions had lags with makeup which has to be actually avoided for better execution. However it looks like Director wanted to prove to audience that ‘Art has no end even if the artist dies’, at some point it will be well understood that Director has used the same trend of this ‘Aathma’ or ‘Aura’ ideology. The cast and the makeup for the cast have been the important pros of the movie with the background music of Govind Vasantha with the little resemblance of the background score played in ‘96’. Besides all these things, the visuals seem to be warm throughout the movie whereas over narrating of play portions seems to be lengthy in the first half which will definitely give us a thought, “It would have been very much better if these portions are trimmed off in the editing session”. Apart from that, ‘Seethakaathi’ is a perfect family entertainer and a slow drama.
As usual we don’t have to tell much about the performance of ‘Makkal Selvan’. As the main lead and as ‘Ayya Aathimoolam’ he has tried a new process of acting with an old man get up and with a very humbled attitude. Dialogue delivery will definitely make people to be stunned with great respect on his adaptation for his character. Other actors like Archana as Ayya’s wife, J. Mahendran as High Court Judge and T. S. B. K. Moulee as ‘Government Drama Sabha’ owner and friend of Ayya, has perfectly performed for the roles they have owed. Sunil as a producer and also as an actor in ‘Seethakaathi’ has taken over the entire second half with the negative character as a debutant, has terribly delivered dialogues with humorous body language.
1) Vijay Sethupathi
2) Engaging story
3) Cinematography and music
What doesn’t work?
1) Slow moving first half
2) Unbelievable sequences
On the whole, ‘Seethakaathi’ is a slow drama with a usual story showcasing the traditional acting skills of soulful play artists!
‘Seethakaathi’ is an endless disguise story of a ‘soulful’ artist!
