How ‘Kollywood’ has been attracting the movie lovers in 2018?

The list of movies which had brought up the recognitions from audience and critics in the year 2018.

Every year when we look back how many movies have brought audience to theatres, this year had approximately 181 direct Tamil movie releases whereas the previous years had release of more than 200 movies. The reason behind the less number of movie releases is because of the strike which had happened more than 50 days.

Not only winning the hearts of movie lovers, some of the prominent movies have been a great success in the box office collection such that coming across with appreciations and reviews as well.

‘Kalakalappu 2’ – With the subject dealt with complete comedy, ‘Kalakalappu 2’ has the cast of Jiiva, Jai, ‘Mirchi’ Shiva, Catherine Tresa, Nikki Galrani, Radharavi, Ramaprabha, Sathish, Yogi Babu, Robo Shankar, VTV Ganesh and Ramdoss in vital roles, music and background score has been composed by Hiphop Tamizha. Just like ‘Kalakalappu’, the second part had a great welcoming on screens such that the movie had the cinematography handled by Senthil Kumar and editing of N B Srikanth.

‘Irumbu Thirai’ – Directed by P S Mithran and bankrolled by Vishal’s ‘Vishal Film Factory’, ‘Irumbu Thirai’ has been a great success in box office by running successfully for almost 100 days which involves Vishal, Arjun Sarja, Samantha Akkineni, Delhi Ganesh, Sreeja Ravi and Robo Shankar in prominent roles, the music and background score for this action techno thriller has been composed by Yuvan Shankar Raja. Cinematography is handled by George C. Williams whereas editing is done by Ruben.

‘Kaala’ – Directed by Pa Ranjith and produced by Dhanush’s ‘Wunderbar Films’, ‘Kaala’ has the faces of Rajnikanth, Nana Patekar, Samuthirakani, Anjali Patil, Nitish Veera, Dileepan, Vikram, Manikandan with the comeback of Eswari Rao and with the debut performance of Huma Qureshi. Music is composed by Santhosh Narayanan, cinematography and editing is done by Murali G. and A. Sreekar Prasad respectively. Just like ‘Kabali’, the movie had been much expected among all ‘Thalaivar’ fans all over the world.

‘Tik Tik Tik’ – Stated to be the first Tamil space film, ‘Tik Tik Tik’ stars ‘Jayam’ Ravi, Nivetha Pethuraj, Aaron Aziz, Ramesh Thilak, Arjunan, Vincent Asokan, Jayaprakash, Rethika Srinivas, Balaji Venugopal, Aarav Ravi and Aathma Patrick in important roles with the musical composition of D imman. Cinematography and editing is done by S. Venkatesh and Pradeep E Ragav respectively. Directed by Shakti Soundar Rajan, ‘Tik Tik Tik’ was bankrolled by the producer, Nemichand Jhabak.

‘Tamizh Padam 2’ – Directed by C. S. Amudhan and produced by ‘Y NOT Studios’, the second part of ‘Tamizh Padam 2’ has been a ‘pakka’ scoop movie such that the movie has ‘Mirchi’ Shiva, Sathish, Disha Pandey, Iswarya Menon, Kalairani, Santhana Bharathi, Manobala, R. Sundarrajan and Nizhalgal Ravi in important roles. Music and background score is composed by N.Kannan whereas and cinematography of ‘Tamizh Padam 2’ is done by Gopi Amarnath. Editing for this comedy film is done by T. S. Suresh.

‘Kadaikutty Singam’ – Starring Karthi, Sathyaraj, Sayyeshaa, Priya Bhavani Shankar, Arthana Binu, Soori, Bhanupriya, Viji Chandrasekhar, Saroja, Mounika, Deepa, Yuvarani and many other actors, ‘Kadaikutty Singam’ has been directed by ‘Pasanga’ fame Pandiraj and produced under the banner of Karthi’s brother and actor Suriya’s ‘2D Entertainment’. Music is composed by D Imman whereas cinematography and editing for this drama is done by Velraj and Ruben respectively. Much welcomed by the family audience, ‘Kadaikutty Singam’ has been successfully running on screens for more than 100 days.

‘Kolamavu Kokila’ – Directed by the debut director Nelson Dilipkumar and produced under the banner of ‘Lyca Productions’, ‘Kolamavu Kokila’ stars Nayanthara, Yogi Babu, Saranya Ponvannan, R. S. Shivaji, Hareesh Peradi, Charles Vinoth, Rajendran, Saravanan, Cheenu Mohan and Anbu Thaasan in important roles. Having the subject of drug dealing business, this black comedy film has been much welcomed because of Nayan’s innocent character. Music is composed by Anirudh Ravichander whereas camera and editing is handled by Sivakumar Vijayan and R. Nirmal respectively. Apart from “Kalyaana Vayasu..” song sung by Anirudh with the lyrics penned by Sivakarthikeyan, the separate song, “Gun In Kaadhal..” penned by Vignesh Shivan was very viral during the release of ‘CoCo’.

‘Merku Thodarchi Malai’ – Directed by Lenin Bharathi and jointly produced by ‘Vijay Sethupathi Productions’ and ‘Dream Tree Productions’, the cast of ‘Merku Thodarchi Malai’ involves Antony, Gayathri Krishna and many new faces narrating the nativity of hilly regions. With the musical composition of ‘Maestro’ Ilayaraja, cinematography is handled by Theni Eswar and editing is done by Mu. Kasi Viswanathan.

‘Imaikka Nodigal’ – Directed by R. Ajay Gnanamuthu and bankrolled by C J Jayakumar’s ‘Cameo Films India’, ‘Imaikka Nodigal’ has been in the genre of a psychological thriller with the cast of Nayanthara, Atharvaa Murali, Raashi Khanna and Anurag Kashyap in prominent characters. Music is composed by Hiphop Tamizha whereas Cinematography and Editing is done by R. D. Rajasekhar and Bhuvan Srinivasan respectively. Apart from this, Vijay Sethupathi has done an extended cameo role in this movie. As a CBI officer, Nayan’s character has been much liked by movie lovers and her fans with great welcoming on screens with good box office collection.

‘Seemaraja’ – Directed by Ponram and produced by R D Raja’s ‘24AM Studios’, ‘Seemaraja’ has the cast of Sivakarthikeyan, Samantha, Simran, Napoleon, Soori and Lal in important roles whereas the music is composed by D Imman. Cinematography is handled by Balasubramaniem whereas editing is done by Vivek Harshan.

‘Chekka Chivantha Vaanam’ – Directed by Maniratnam and produced by ‘Madras Talkies’ in association with ‘Lyca Productions’, ‘Chekka Chivantha Vaanam’ had a star studded cast involving Arvind Swami, Vijay Sethupathi, Silambarasan, Arun Vijay, Jyotika, Aditi Rao Hydari, Aishwarya Rajesh, Dayana Erappa, Prakash Raj and Jayasudha in lead roles with the musical composition of A R Rahman. Cinematography is handled by Santosh Sivan and editing is done by A. Sreekar Prasad.

‘Pariyerum Perumal’ – Directed by the debut director Mari Selvaraj and produced by Director Pa Ranjith’s ‘Neelam Productions’, ‘Pariyerum Perumal’ has been involving Kathir, Anandhi, Yogi Babu, Vannarpettai Thangaraj, G. Marimuthu and Shanmugarajan, the entire movie had a beautiful cinematography of Sridhar with the editing done by Selva RK. Music and background score for this serious drama is composed by Santhosh Narayanan.

‘96’ – Having a realistic romantic story, Trisha as ‘Jaanu’ and Vijay Sethupathi as ‘Vijay Sethupathi’ has been well recognized through the movie, ‘96’ such that the cast also involved Devadarshini, Janagaraj, Bagavathi Perumal, Aadukalam Murugadoss, Varsha Bollamma, Kavithalaya Krishnan, Niyathi Kadambi, Suryaa and Gowtham have been playing important roles. Playing the young roles of ‘Ram’ and ‘Jaanu’, Adithya Bhaskar, the son of veteran actor M S Bhaskar and Gouri G Kishan were swinging out with great fame through their debut performances respectively. Narrating the feelings of lovers who meet after a gap of 23 years spending a night together, the story seemed to attract all movie lovers with the cinematography of Mahediran Jayaraju and N. Shanmuga Sundaram and editing of R. Govindaraj. Directed by the cinematographer of ‘Naduvula Konjam Pakkatha Kanom’ C Prem Kumar and with the bankrolling of ‘Madras Enterprises’, the music is composed by the co founder of the popular music band, ‘Thaikkudam Bridge’, Govind Vasantha’s music were one of the soothing aspects in the movie.

‘Ratsasan’ – Directed by ‘Mundasupatti’ Ram kumar and produced by G. Dilli Babu and R. Sridhar ‘Axess Film Factory’, the cast of this psychological crime thriller has been including Vishnu Vishal, Amala Paul, Radha Ravi, Kaali Venkat, Saravanan, Yasar, Abhirami and many other actors. Music and background score is composed by Ghibran whereas camera and editing is handled by P. V. Sankar and San Lokesh respectively. Having a serious thrilling subject, ‘Ratsasan’ has been an unexpected success in the box office as a blockbuster collection with so much welcoming.

‘Vada Chennai’ – Directed by Vetrimaaran, the story about the revolving of gangster in ‘Vada Chennai’ has involved Dhanush, Ameer, Andrea Jeremiah, Aishwarya Rajesh, Samuthirakani, Kishore, Pawan, Daniel Balaji and Radha Ravi in important roles. With the bankrolling of Dhanush’s ‘Wunderbar Films’, Cinematography and editing done by Velraj and G. B. Venkatesh respectively with the musical strings played by Santhosh Narayanan.

‘Sarkar’ – Directed by A R Murugadoss and bankrolled by ‘Sun Pictures’, ‘Sarkar’ involves Vijay, Keerthy Suresh, Varalaxmi Sarathkumar, Radha Ravi, Pala Karuppiah, Yogi Babu and Rajesh in important roles, which had the subject dealing country’s political aspect creating many controversies. With the musical composition of A R Rahman, cinematography and editing is done by Girish Gangadharan and A. Sreekar Prasad respectively.

‘2.0’ – Directed by Shankar and produced by ‘Lyca Productions’, the second part of ‘Endhiran’ i.e, ‘2.0’ involved faces of Rajnikanth, Amy Jackson, Akshay Kumar and many other actors in the lead roles. Having a great message about using phones, this sci-fi movie has the cinematography handled by legendary lens of Nirav Shah and editing is done by Antony respectively. Music and background score is composed by A R Rahman whereas 3D SRL technology in sound has been created by the Oscar Winning Sound Designer Resul Pookkutty with a whopping budget consumed in the making.

Kanaa’ – Directed by the lyricist and the singer, Arunraja Kamaraj and produced by Sivakarthikeyan’s debut banner of ‘Sivakarthikeyan Productions’, ‘Kanaa’ is based on the story of a girl belonging to a family with her father as a farmer, struggling to come up in their lives by playing in Women’s Cricket team for World Cup match and in agriculture simultaneously. Having Sivakarthikeyan, Aishwarya Rajesh, Sathyaraj, Darshan, Rama, Blade Shankar, Ramdoss and Ilavarasu in important roles, the musical composition for ‘Kanaa’ is scored by Dhibu Ninan Thomas. Camera handled by Dinesh Krishnan whereas editing is done by Ruben.

‘Adanga Maru’ – Bankrolled by ‘Home Movie Makers’ and directed by the debut director, Karthik Thangavel, ‘Adanga Maru’ has been running successfully on screens with the cast involving ‘Jayam’ Ravi and Raashi Khanna in lead roles. Along with them, Subbu Panchu , Babu Antony, Ramdoss, Sampath Raj, Mime Gopi, Azhagam Perumal, Ponvannan, Shabeer Kallarakkal and Poorna played the supporting roles. With the musical composition and background scored by Sam C S, cinematography is handled by Sathyan Sooryan and editing is composed by Anthony L Ruben. Stunts were choreographed by Stunt Siva's son, Kevin.
