Stated to be based on Kamal Haasan’s ‘Sathya’ (1988), ‘Dha Dha 87’ is much expected on screens with Charuhasan and Keerthy Suresh’s grandmother, actress Saroja. Is this a romantic thriller or just a gangster based story? What is actually ‘Dha Dha 87’ about?
Sathya (Charuhasan) remains to be strong as a don as he was there controlling all the political and societal issues in an area whereas he lives by thinking his old love on Malayalam girl, Geetha (Saroja) and wishes to get back to her in the craving for love and companionship at least in the old age. In one hand, there have been many political clashes happening with caste; ‘Jail’ Pandi roams behind a new resident, Jeni who makes all youngsters crazy of her beauty on the other hand. However Jeni denies Pandi’s proposal which is then continued with the threatening of Sathya to stop disturbing Jeni after then, what will Pandi do to make Jeni understand his love on her? Will she love him back in the end? Even if they both love what will be the problem? will be the climax about love in ‘Dha Dha 87’!
Having so many characters trying to link only with love and the residential area they live, so many unwanted scenes were over exaggerated and confused with the screen play in the first half whereas the second half seemed to have a strong knot which will definitely make audience to think ‘if that one knot is concentrated without touching the old don track and the political clash track’, ‘Dha Dha 87’ would have been with an absolute story. However the songs seemed to be boring without any proper purpose, the background music seems to be ok throughout, cinematography looks descent but seemed little lengthy because of the exaggerating and confused screenplay. Hope at least the director must know the fact why more unwanted characters like the fat, terror policeman who supports love and the parents who care more for their son’s love than his career which were so boring and unwanted.
Experienced in acting for ages, even in their old age, Charuhasan and Saroja have acted so brilliantly even their portions were very less. Been the main lead, Anand Kumar’s performance seemed to imitate ‘Idharkkudhaane Aasaipattai Balakumara’ Vijay Sethupathi’s performance, Kathir as a friend of Anand has been playing the supporting role well. The lead heroine (resembling like ‘Aruvi’ fame Aditi Balan, Sri Pallavi who is the main character in the entire film, has aptly done her role even though her performance is more needed and revealed only in the second half. Infact, she will be the one who wilkl definitely hold the audience on the seats in spite of the boring story. Last but not the least; Janagaraj has done his role well as a supporting father with so much understanding to the ‘feelings’ of his daughter.
1) Knot in the second half
2) Sri Pallavi’s performance
What doesn’t work?
1) Unwanted scenes
2) Song insertions in abrupt sequences
3) Confusing unlinked stories
On the whole, ‘Dha Dha 87’ is empty in the first half whereas remained to be a little disappointment in executing the unusual knot in the second knot due to the disturbance of other exhaustions.
‘Dha Dha 87’ is about ‘love and feelings’ but a great disappointment in execution!
