After ‘Pariyerum Perumal’ and ‘Sigai’, ‘Sathru’ has been much awaited on the screens since we all know that Kathir has been a wonderful performer in the recent trend of actors in Kollywood. Along with Kathir, will this cop story ‘Sathru’ involving Srushti Dange, Neelima Rani, Ponvannan, Marimuthu and Laguparan directed by the debutant Naveen Nanjundan be an amazing treat for movie lovers this week? Let this review give you an idea about how awing this ‘Sathru’ is!
Kathir is a strong police officer who takes charge without having second thought to take action in any emergency circumstances without asking permission from his superior officers. However in the routine of his work, he becomes in charge for a child kidnapping case in which he rescues the kid along with the money of the parents and shoots one of the rogues from the gang of 4 kidnappers. Since Kathir shoots one guy without asking permission from his superiors, he gets suspended for 3 months. By that time, the gang of kidnappers who are in a great grudge on Kathir for killing one of their partners plans to kill everyone from his family one by one as a revenge. How Kathir saves his family from those threats? How he finds everyone and kills them within 24 hours? is the running story of ‘Sathru’!
Mixing up the stories of most of the prominent cop movies (‘Kaakkha Kaakkha’, ‘Ratsasan’ etc.,) from Kollywood, debut director Naveen Nanjundan has played safe without any duet songs, comedy and item songs which is a very appreciable attempt. Moving forward with continuously running, the screenplay seems to be predictable as the story approaches till interval block. Besides all those aspects, the second half seems to be so much laid down having the usual and predictable climax with so much non syncing dialogues and also logic mistakes. However background music composed by Amresh Ganesh reminds ‘Petta’ background music then and there, the music seems to be descent till the end. Also, Cinematography of Mahesh Muthuswami and editing of Prasanna G K has been neat and simple throughout the movie.
Giving some hit movies like ‘Pariyerum Perumal’ and ‘Sigai’ at recent times; Kathir’s efforts on working out with the body, looks and also in action sequences to look familiar as a police officer is very much prominent whereas he seems to be without any emotions in the sentiment portions. Said to be the lover of Kathir, Srushti Dange remains to be as a lover girl till the end without having any strong portion. Laguparan as the main villain and his gang members has been the right choice for the negative characters whereas as Kathir’s dad Ponvannan, as Kathir’s sister in law Neelima Rani, as Kathir’s brother from army Pawan and as a strict opposing superior, Marimuthu have performed their parts well. Last but not the least as Laguparan’s friend and an important female villain, Suja Varunee has performed well.
1) Screenplay without commercial aspects
2) Cinematography and editing
What doesn’t work?
1) Usual story
2) Second half
3) Logic mistakes
On the whole, ‘Sathru’ would have been bagging everyone’s appreciations if it had achieved the same strength that the first half moved with!
