‘Aadukalam’ Naren and his younger brother (Singapore return) remain to be wealthy faces in the village such that they try to acquire Dhanush’s farming land which is the only left out the property of Dhanush and his family of 2 sons (Teejay Arunachalam and Ken Karunas), 1 daughter and his wife (Manju Warrier). With the tortures which ‘Aadukalam’ Naren and his family give at daily basis, Teejay Arunachalam gives a hard thrash to ‘Aadukalam’ Naren’s son such that the whole mess becomes a chain of deaths back to back by starting off with the murder of Teejay done by ‘Aadukalam’ Naren and then ‘Aadukalam’ Naren murdered by Ken Karunas in order to sweep away the sorrow of his family which is doomed due to the death of Teejay. Knowing this, Dhanush abscond with his family to save Ken from the clutches of ‘Aadukalam’ Naren’s family. Will Dhanush save his son from the arrogant and wealthy people in spite of having no support? How will he be saving his family and his son from the hunting opponents? What is the reason for Dhanush to be silent without being bold instead of swapping off the heads of the enemies will be revealed in the blood-shedding and rustic climax of ‘Asuran’!
Inspired from the Tamil novel ‘Vekkai’ written by the writer Poomani, we knew that Vetrimaaran had directed the film ‘Asuran’ such that the screenplay had been so smooth with the running, chasing and the answers for why it all happened in which that has never stopped and had been gradually drifting to the next level for knowing ‘What is gonna happen?’. However, the first half seemed little lengthy compared to the second half, the non-linear story was easily understandable without any confusions and also with the ‘pakka’ Tirunelveli Tamil slang (which definitely needs to be appreciated) had overtaken the second half’s thrill. Apart from that, the blood-shedding sequences were the only threatening factor which will take up our breath may not be that attractive for the ladies and children whereas those live-action sequences seemed more realistic if we look into the film making perspective. Besides them, the art direction, cinematography (except the distorted CG scenes), the soothing romance songs, the thrilling background score and also the editing were really good for visually understanding the nativity.
There is no surprise that Dhanush will be shown and seen in a different shade if it is ‘A Vetrimaaran Film’. He had just taken a gulp of ‘Siva Saamy’ character by getting into the skin of the role which has to have more patience, anger, boldness, respectable and also with the village nativity. Like a supporting, bold, caring wife and as an affectionate mother Manju Warrier had performed her debut role. Apart from them, as a bold son, Teejay, as an adamant son, Ken, as a supportive brother-in-law, Pasupathy, as an ambitious and a wealthy person who wants to take revenge, ‘Aadukalam’ Naren, as a Police who stands between wealthy people and law and order, Balaji Sakthivel and as a supportive advocate, Prakash Raj had performed their roles well.
1) Screenplay and Direction
2) Involvement of Dhanush, Manju Warrier and other actors
3) Songs, Cinematography, Editing and Art Direction
What doesn’t work?
1) Only till the reveal of the story with the flashback no such major flaws can be put forth.
On the whole, ‘Asuran’ is a revenge-action film which can be mentioned as a perfect watch for action film lovers with a slight addition of love, family sentiments, and emotions.
Verdict: ‘Asuran’ is all about bringing out the devil which is calm inside at the right time!
