After ‘Thadam’ and ‘Saaho’, we knew that Arun Vijay’s association with Director Karthick Naren was creating a great expectation such that finally the film ‘Mafia: Chapter 1’ had the release today. Let us see how this action thriller on screens!
Aryan (Arun Vijay) is the officer who works in the Narcotics Department such that he always hunts the city from the depth to clean out all the drugs suppliers with the teaming up with his batch mates Sathya (Priya Bhavani Shankar) and Varun. However, Aryan is obsessed in clearing out the drug suppliers such that his team head, Selvam and his neighborhood person Mugilan (‘Thalaivaasal’ Vijay) dies while they also work to find the main drug mafia gang leader. Knowing that the main drug supplying gang leader is very dangerous, Aryan wants to face him so that he will have an idea about how he is. As he plans, he visits the gang leader’s place in the view that he will then follow up by trying to come out and reveal himself at least for killing Aryan. But the plan changes with a twist! What is the twist? Will Aryan catch the drug mafia supplier? What will happen then? Diwaker Kumaran aka DK (Prasanna) is the only drug mafia supplier or is there any big network? The remaining will have the reveal in the end of ‘Mafia: Chapter 1’!
Looking into the analysis of the film’s story and screenplay, the opening starts with the collapse scene which will be happening in the pre-climax which is actually interesting. Also, the revealing of characters is also pretty impressive. However, the first half is gradually moving with the mission to get the main drug supplier; the second half is smooth and sluggish since ‘we’ as the audience knew that he (Prasanna) is the negative character. But towards the end, the twist made was unexpected whereas the villain was slightly predictable through the drama portions and build up scenes of DK’s shootout sequence. Special appreciations to the cinematographer Gokul Benoy for the extremely slow shots during the action sequences and also for revealing vibrant colors in serious stunt scenes! Also, the editing and the background score were also impressive even though there had been lags in the detailing of a few characters. Overall, Karthick Naren has neatly presented the usual story of an officer who is from the Narcotics Department and undergoing an operation.
We don’t have to describe how powerful Arun Vijay will be playing if he is given the role of a cop or another strong and action-based character. He has absolutely done his best in mannerism, body language, dialogue delivery and mainly worked well on his body fitness which is so apt to make us visualize a cop. However, she has tried to give some variance in the characters which she has played in recent times; Priya Bhavani Shankar has tried acting in a completely serious role well. Maybe we have seen her more in homely characters; it takes time to connect with her to this serious character in the film. Playing a different and stylish negative role, Prasanna has been making us tell ‘wow’ in the frames he had appeared even though the smartass character seemed weak in some instances. The remaining actors like ‘Thalaivaasal’ Vijay, Barath Reddy, and others had performed their roles well.
1) Performance of Arun Vijay
2) Neat presentation and the mood of the film
3) Cinematography, background score & editing
What doesn’t work?
1) Usual story
2) Lags and few logic mistakes
On the whole, ‘Mafia: Chapter 1’ is a story with a usual tiff between a cop and a mafia gang head but not in a boring mood. Will remind you about the action thrillers we watch in home when we have leisure time.
Verdict: ‘Mafia: Chapter 1’ is all about gunshots and sneak outs with a cop’s usual mission story!
